BARBER, Ruth (1785-1877)

More of the head and foot stones found in Richmond Historic Cemetery Site 14.

This site was designated as an historical site after a hunter friend of my uncle (Leroy James) found them. The Rhode Island Historical Society was not aware of these very old graves and because of his efforts this has become a protected site so that this history can be preserved. My uncle and aunt cleaned the head and foot stones as best they could, stood them up since many were laying on the ground, and as a result I was able to take these photos.

The headstone reads:

We trust she sleeps in Jesus
Ruth
Wife of
Jonathan James
Died Aug. 2, 1877
In her 92 year.

We miss you dear mother, we miss you now.
The grave has closed upon your brow.
We would not call you back again,
Into this world of sin and pain.

Photographed in November 2000 in Richmond, Rhode Island.
